Each of our weeks has an excel document listing the meals we will have during the trip and all the food items we will be taking to make these. Each document then adds up to total of each individual food item so we can pack all the right food items in  for each week.

Each week's worth of food is then split up into 'fresh' and 'dry' and 'dehydrated'. Fresh food simply being things that will go off without refrigeration. This includes meats and fruit and veg. The dry food includes things that are 'long life', found on the supermarket shelves. The dehydrated items are meals and snacks that we are preparing at home to eat out on trip, including meals and snacks. 

Food. Man. A 64 day adventure along the entire length of the Australian Alpine Walking Track and food is by far the most challenging part. Obviously fruit and veggies won't last for 64 days straight, so we've had to put a little more thought into what we will be eating for the 2 months of this walk. It would also make our packs weigh well over 100kg if we were to carry all our food for that amount of time!

So first thing was organising 'food drops' or 'dry drops'. These are spots along the track, usually where there is road access, that we will be leaving boxes/barrels of food. Every drop marks one 'week' or 'section' of our walk. For this walk we will have food drops every 4 to 10 days. This allows us to carry no more than 10 days of food, as well as allowing us to pick up other important items such as spare batteries and extra sunscreen etc. We will cover a distance of 2,267km just to place these drops!

Both of us really appreciate eating fresh fruits and veggies, so we have organised 'live drops'. These drops will be brought to us by family and friends along the track. We are very lucky to also have these people do some fresh shopping with them  just for us. This allows us to eat fresh fruit and veg in sections of our walk far away from any town.  (A link will be provided soon for more detailed info about food drops)
